Temple Mural Paintings at Wat Somanat Wihan
Mural Paintings of Thailand Series
The Mural Paintings of Thailand Series is a very beautiful series of large sized, 8¼ x 11, hard cover books showing and explaining the best of the temple mural paintings in Thailand. The murals have been photographed in glorious colour, section by section, and next to these colour plates the story being shown is explained in both Thai and English. These books are both collectors pieces and well done academic works.
Officially named Wat Somanat Ratchawora Wihan, this temple was built as an act of merit by King Rama IV, Phrabat Somdej Phra Chomklao. The king dedicated the new wat to Somdej Phra Nang Chao Somanat Watthanawadee, his consort, who died at the beginning of his reign. It is officially a royal temple in the catagory of Ratchawora Wihan, second class.
In the example - part of a mural from the reign of King Rama IV, from the story of Inao. The painting shows Malacca city and its port. It is an exotic and beautiful scene.
