Thailights by William E Wormsley

Bright Spots in an American Fulbright Year

Bill Wormsley went to Thailand as a Fulbright Scholar in 1989. He taught Anthropology at Silpakorn University in Bangkok. Over the course of the next year he came to know and love the people and culture of Thailand. With faculty and student colleagues from Silpakorn, he visited towns, cities and rural villages throughout Thailand, including an extended trip through Isan where he and a group of Chinese photographers followed the course of the Mekong River along Thailand's northeastern borders. He attended weddings, funerals, cremations and festivals. He conducted research aimed at understanding the urban adaptations of migrants from rural Isan as they bought their hopes and lives to Bangkok. He focused on the activities of tuktuk and taxi drivers, sidewalk food vendors, and go-go dancers. As an anthropologist he participated in their lives, as they did his. Thailights is the story of that year and the people and activities that led the author to be seduced by Siam.

William E. Wormsley is a social anthropologist. He was a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award winner in Thailand, where he was also John F. Kennedy Professor of anthropology at Silpakorn University. Previously, in Papua New Guinea, he was Research Fellow at the Institute of Applied Social and Economic Research, Director of the Enga Law and Order Project, Program Coordinator of a World Bank rural development project, and Member of the Prime Minister's Council on Village Development. A Vietnam veteran, he has served as President of Veterans Vietnam Restoration Project, an organization committed to improving access to health services in contemporary Vietnam. His most recent teaching position was at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, where he continues to be Adjunct Professor of Anthropology. His is the author of The White Man Will Eat You! An Anthropologist among the Imbonggu of New Guinea.
