Married to the Demon King: Sri Daoruang and Her Demon Folk
By Susan F. Kepner
Married to the Demon King is about the relationship between the sexes in present day Thailand. The author uses six stories by a leading Thai writer of fiction, Wanna Sawatsri, who published under the pen name of Sri Daoruang. Sri Daoruang took her characters from the Thai version of the Indian classic, the Ramayana, called Ramakian and drops them into a modern Bangkok setting.
The author, Dr. Susan Kepner, a teacher of Thai and Southeast Asian literature at the University of California, Berkeley, translates and uses the Sri Daoruang stories to show the both the position of women in society in today's modern Thailand and as a tribute to Wanna Sawatsri.
